Underlying this text are three important aspects of critical thinking – the ability to understand and evaluate arguments, the ability to make well-reasoned decisions, and the tendency to be fair-minded. Certain distinct skills are involved in the assessment of arguments and in good decision-making ; for example, recognising reasons, conclusions and unstated assumptions, drawing conclusions, appraising evidence, evaluating statements and principles, and analysing words, phrases and concepts. The book offers practice in these reasoning skills, so that the skills can be both applied to topics within the text, and also carried over to topics not included in the book.
