Athronydd Groegaidd hynafol oedd Platon (Groeg: Πλάτων ''Plátōn''; Lladineiddwyd fel ''Plato''). Fe'i ganwyd yn 428/427 CC yn Athen neu Aegina, ac fe fu farw yn 348/347 CC yn Athen.Cynigiodd Platon y dadansoddiad cyntaf systematig o wleidyddiaeth: man cychwyn ym myd athroniaeth fodern. Mae syniadau Platon yn sylfeini i syniadau'r byd diwylliedig a hefyd yn gonglfaen yn hanes a datblygiad y Gorllewin.
